Reminder: Samarasekera, Schindler, Andrews, and Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy Jocelyn Downie Speak on Academic Freedom Today

The original notice, as it appears on the website of the Association of Academic Staff at the University of Alberta:

Please attend the Academic Freedom public presentations on September 28, 2012 in ECHA L1-190. Dr. Indira Samarasekera (U of A President), Dr. Jocelyn Downie (Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy), Dr. David Schindler (Killam Memorial Professor of Ecology, Professor Biological Sciences, U of A), and Nathan Andrews (Vice President Academic, Graduate Students’ Association, U of A) will be the discussants in a panel presentation, “The Relevance of Academic Freedom,” from 3:00-4:00pm. Dr. Downie will also be making a presentation, “What is Academic Freedom?,” from 8:00-9:00pm.

The press release for the event notes:

The freedom to teach, research, and learn in post-secondary institutions is considered critical for an educated workforce and a prosperous country. But when should society be alarmed if academic freedom is suppressed?

I’d say, Always. Presumably, we’re being asked to consider specific threats. Come hear what President Samarasekera, Professor Schindler, Professor Downie, and Graduate Student VP Academic Nathan Andrews have to say. Both sessions are in the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy L-190.
