Last week, in tandem with the conference “Academia in the Age of Austerity,” the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) issued a report that suggests Ontarians do not accept their provincial government’s austerity agenda for post-secondary education. (Full report here.)
The report furthermore suggests that Ontarians would prefer to see professors — not the government, not university administrators — entrusted with the responsibilities of ensuring the quality of education their universities offer.
This is particularly interesting news in a week that included reports that an administrative Visioning team called VOCALE is busy at work here taking decisions for the University of Alberta’s approach to online education.
There is a little information about Vocale on the University of Alberta’s official blog, Colloquy, which indicated that in early January the University community would receive the report from the Online Visioning team for which VOCALE is one of the off-shoots. We’ll receive a report, then, after-the-fact, from a committee already disbanded about a new team that is already at work. The promise is that faculty input will be solicited in regard to VOCALE, but for the moment Colloquy is (it seems) interested only in soliciting input of another character.
Eleven members of the University’s almost 50,000-member community indulged the administration in the exercise to the left before the poll was closed. Is it perhaps time for faculty to participate, in far greater numbers, in other more meaningful exercises?
