Arts Student Manderscheid Quoted in Article on Government’s Announcement of $142.5 Million for UCalgary Engineering

Yesterday the Government announced that it is giving $142.5 million to University of Calgary Engineering. On March 7th, the Government of Alberta cut $147 million for its funding of advanced education in the province. Graduate student John Manderscheid (History & Classics) is quoted in Metro Calgary’s article on the news, in which the Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education Thomas Lukaszuk declares of the Government’s decision, “We know that this is where the talent is.” Manderscheid: “There’s no instance of the minister coming and wanting to see what people are accomplishing, he’s only wanting to see, ‘Oh, how can this be used to make more money? Or, how can this be sold to the private sector?’ ”

  1. Aside from the fact that public funds are not supposed to be allocated towards the preferences of one person the real test will be if U of C accepts money taken from one group of students and distributes it to another. Are they independent enough make their own decisions?
